1991, F-150, 302ci, smelled a burning, acrid smell, head lamps no longer work, running lights are OK, switch tests OK, auto head lights are on when engine running, no high beam/low beam indicator light. Is it possible there is a fuseable link in the system and where is it. Chiltons or Haynes does not give this information. Now we're desperate... thanks for any help
Oh I know that smell VERY well. My dad's 89 F150 did the same thing. On the floor is your high beam /low beam switch. It gets water, salt and moisture in it then gets screwed up. Just replace it. Only costs around $10. Two screws and a plug and its out.
I notice you are from Ontario. As Ontario Chapter Leader I would like to take this time to invite you to join the chapter. Scroll down the main forum page to Ontario Chapter. Below Ontario chapter it will have a join Chapter link. Go there then send a request and I will accept it. See ya around!
I was also completely stumped as to why my headlights wouldn't work. As my Ford is a snow plowing truck (lots of salt on my boots) I have to replace the the high/low beam switch on the floor once a year to keep things working. I also had to replace the entire floor on the driver's side last fall as well.
Not a smart move by Ford to put a switch down there.
Thanks for the info. I will replace the switch and see what screws up next. Love the truck but the maintenance issues are a bit of a pain. I'll keep you all posted.
