Hello all. Just got my first 7.3 and have a few questions. What would you recomend for a good service manual? Also, Having trouble starting. from what I gather from other posts and trying to isolate the problem myself, It would seem that the glowplug relay is shot. It turns over well and it's smoking, so fuel is getting in. The glowplug light on the dash comes on as usual, but shouldn't there be an audible click when the relay kicks in AND when it kicks out?
Thanks in advance,
Fullcrew7.3
There's an audible click when the glow plug relay engages, but I'd have to be under the hood of my truck to hear it. The glow plug relay is quite cheap and easy to replace. The NAPA part number is GPR-109, and they only cost about $25. You can step up to a Stancor relay, and that's OEM, but they're more expensive, and many have had good luck with the NAPA model. There are two large posts, and two small posts on top of the relay. It doesn't matter if you get the wires crossed, as long as the large terminals go on the large posts, and the small terminals go on the small posts.
What you should see when the system is functioning properly, is you turn the key to the "On" position, and the Wait To Start light will come on. Once it's off, start the truck. It should fire up withing a few revolutions of the crankshaft. Once it starts, the needle on the voltmeter should be well to the left of center for a while, for as long as the glow plugs are energized. Depending on a number of conditions, this could take from a few seconds to two minutes. Once the needle rises to it's normal position, your glow plugs are shut off, and you're ready to go.
I hope this helps.
Since you're new to Powerstrokes, here's a money saving tip: unless it's a body part for your truck, there isn't any reason to buy parts from Ford. Many of the engine components are available cheaper through International, and/or a regular parts store like NAPA or Autozone.
If you find that Autozone is more convenient for you than NAPA, their part number for a glow plug relay is MR-99, at about the same price as NAPA's GPR-109.
