How does the oil filtration system work?

On the '48 flathead.

I see in other posts, the filter only cleans about 20% of the oil.

Doing an oil change yesterday, I don't see how the "clean" oil gets back to the pan.

If the dirty oil is fed into the canaster on the upper side, and forced through the filter, how does it return to the pan?

The center pipe is sealed by the filter at the bottom and the top.
The oil is "pushed" through the filter.
Now how does it return???

The center pipe has the return line in the bottom. are there holes drilled in the center pipe so the oil can get to the return line?

If the center pipe is solid wall, is the filtration system a non functional system?

thanks

At the back of the block the oil pump pumps the oil up where it splits about 70% and 30%. The 70% goes to the lifter valley and the 30% goes to the oil filter canister. Where it must go through the filter and through some small holes in the middle tube back to the oil pan. This system was an after thought since many engines didn't get the filter and many people just removed it.

There is a kit available (www.redsheaders.com) which will give you full flow oil filtering
It needs some machining of the block but would be worth considering if doing a rebuild
