Hey guys, had my truck for years, but this is the first time I have had this problem. The truck sat for over a year, with a tiny bit of gas in the tank. When I started it last week it ran fine, then I put gas in and it started running like crap. I figured I mixed up the "gelled" gas so I pulled the carb and cleaned it and replaced the fuel filter. Here is the question. It is a Motorcraft carb (84 I-6) and has an automatic choke at the back. Going into the choke is a metal line (like a fuel line) and screws into the mechanism. The other end APPEARS to be pressed into the exhaust manifold. This line is rusted to pieces and when I moved it it snapped off leaving about an inch of rusted metal sticking out of the exhaust manifold. Am I correct in thinking this is some sort of temp sensing unit, and if so, is it pressed into the manifold and how big a chore am I looking at to fix this booger?
With the truck running, you should feel a little vacuum in the steel line. What this does is draw warm air from the exhaust manifold up into the black choke housing to help the bi-metal spring inside the housing warm up and pull the choke off. You may be able to use steel brake line from the auto parts store to replace it, but you may have to get creative to try to get it mounted back on the exhaust manifold.
Thanks for the info, but I went to NAPA and got a replacement kit. Took about and hour to dig the broken piece out of hte manifold, but finally got it.
