hi guys i have a question: i went out to start my bronco today and for a second it did and then i heard a "CLUNK" and it shut itself off. after that i tried again to start it and all i heard was a light clunking noise. i took the dustcover off my transmission and had my dad try to start it and the starter engaged but it wouldnt turn the flywheel. i tried to turn it manually but no dice. is there a way to get it to turn without having to get it fixed at a tranny shop? or any insight onto why it would seize up like this?
I don't think you have to look at the tranny, it might be the motor? Put a breaker bar and socket on the bolt that holds damper pulley on and see if you can rotate the motor manually.
Or the other option is the starter is toast. The magnetic part that kicks the helix out to engage with the flywheel is working but the brushes/armature or armature bearings counld be shot. Try the starter before going anywhere.
First, determine that the engine itself is not seized, spun bearing or something else. Saw one where the V-belt system was overtightened on an older F-350 and the front main bearing was roached. Once you determine that the engine is free start with the starter. Take it off and put it in a vise on the bench hook the ground to the flange and the hot side to the contact post and determine if the starter has the oomph to get it going. If that's okay, check the chassis to engine grounds and make sure all are tight. A loose ground will cause the issue you're experiencing. Try the one (flat braided cable) from the firewall to the passenger side of the engine first as it's closest to the starter.
