460 decoding tag #'s
hey everyone. i have a 58 F100 with a 302 and i have been wanting to put a BB in it. i just picked up a complete 460 for free. but it needs a total rebuild. it looks like it has never been opened. it still had the little tags on it. just curious to the year and if it is a 460....thanks

yes, your engine is a 460 originally installed in a 1970 vehicle. 9-m, engine built in 1969 towards the end of the year, m is the month(a=jan). 5 probably refers to a change level. 866-a may be an engine code and change level. i got this information from two books by tom monroe. one is how to rebuild small block ford engines (the 90 degree v-8 family which include 289,302, and 351W and all the bored/stroked members of the family). 2nd book: how to rebuild ford v8 engines which covers the 335 and 385 series engines. if your going to build your 460, buy the book...it is worth the money. good luck, garsten
