Slotted Rotors

How much of a difference is there using slotted rotors on a Bronco? It there a noticeable amount of breaking power compared to regular rotors? I am running 285/75/16 (33’s) tires and notices it takes a little bit more/longer to stop. What other upgrades can I do to increase breaking power? Thanks guys.

Slotted Rotors/Braking Power

First make sure that the rotors are of specified thickness and have not been turned to death. Slotted rotors enhance cooling. Cross drill the rotors and chamfer the holes to help pad life. Take a look at the drill patterns on custom rotors so that you end up with a symetrical pattern. Go to a semi-metallic pad like the "Gold Standard" life time warranty pad from Autozone. Make sure that your shoes on the rear are in good shape and correctly adjusted.

I'd be careful to use pads with a lifetime warranty. Yes, they may last a lot longer than regular pads, but I've heard that rotors will wear faster with harder pads. Changing pads is quick and easy, and they aren't that expensive, but that's not the case with rotors.

Aurgathor,
Look at the component material of the pad to use. High mettallic content pads do indeed wear a rotor faster. Pads with a high ceramic content do not enter that range of wear. The key to rotor longevity is the surfacing and maintenance. I know we use them off road and in inclement (salty etc.) conditions. Reach over the wheel with the hose once every two or three days and especially after subjecting braking system to crud and blast the calipers/disc thoroughly. It will pay off hansomely. Pay as much attention as possible to the drums and make sure the adjustment holes have the rubber plugs in them. I take them down to clean in the spring and in the fall. Just take the wheel off, slide the drum off and clean with CRC or other brake cleaner. It also serves as an inspection that will give you a comfort level with the system.

Some of the more expensive pads will give you more stopping power. You might want to go to "Brakes, Steering, Suspension,Tires, Wheels" and ask people there.
