Angry '89 motor problems

Recently, I put another motor in my '86 Bronco. I bought a used '89 Lincoln 302 and once again changed everything out. For some reason the flywheel on the linc motor had different bolt hole patterns connecting it to the TC. But with a good drill bit I was able to overcome that problem. It still bolts up nice and tight with no slack at the holes, but now it wont make a complete revolution. Can anyone think of what might be wrong?

More than likly the Lincoln had a different tranny than yours, take the fly wheel off of your old motor and use that.

thanks. but the old flywheel had different hole patterns for the crank bolts. had to use a new wheel made for the 89 lincoln. btw, solved that problem for now. however, a new problem has emerged....wont start. i get spark and gas, and when i turn the dist. to its max left (clockwise), i get backfire. anything past there in the other direction yields nothing. ideas?

Are you sure the motor that came out of the Lincoln is a 302? If both motors are a 302 the cranks should be the same with same bolt pattern on the end of the crank. Sounds to me like you have a 351.

As fars as the backfire goes, was the motor running in the Lincoln before you pulled out? Did you pull the distributor out in the process and then put it back in?

Take your #1 spark plug out and turn (manually) the motor untill you get the #1 piston to come up to TDC on the compression stroke, you will know this because you will hear air rushing out of the spark plug hole. Once its top dead center, look at the rotor button on the distributor and see which plug wire it is pointing to. It should be pointing to plug wire #1, if its pointing to #6 your 180 degrees out.

thanks dave! I have determined 2 things... 1)Im not sure that a 5.0L intake will fit properly on a 351 so Im 98% sure its a 302. and after talking with some tech's at the local Ford shop, they say that lincoln does make things a little different sometimes just to be different. 2) I was 180 degrees out on my distributor. I did have to remove it when I installed my intakes but obviously i didnt put it back correctly as I had thought.
That brings me to my newest dilemma: im not sure that what I think is the #1 post on my cap is actually #1. The chiltons cd-rom Im using says that its the post directly to the right of the back cap snap. however, when I turned the dist. 180 degrees, it goes to the next one over to the right from what my diagram says. I believe thats the one that it came off of previously, but I want to be 100% correct to avoid future problems. can you advise?

Lincoln may do some different stuff but the engines are the same regardless. This what I found so far that leads me to believe that one of your motors is not original equipment. All 302's up to 1981 used a 28oz flexplate after that they went to a 50oz flexplate. Here are the Ford factory numbers for the flexplate for the 86 302 and the 89 302.

They are both exactly the same. Now you do know that you have to rotate the flex plate around until the holes line up right?
As for the firing order you are right, its the second one over to the right of the hold down clamp. here is the firing order for a 89 302, but if you have a 89 302 HO the firing order is the same as a 351W.
1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
And the it rotates in a counterclockwise rotation.<V</V
