Sometime I start the engine and after 4 or 5 minutes that it runs in the parking, it stalls without any reasons. Do this the same way I turn off the ignition switch. I wait 30 seconds and retart it and it runs OK.
Went on a trip this weekend and was running on highway on cruise at 60 miles per hour. Engine rans at about 2500rpm and suddenly it cuts like in my parking for about a couple of seconds and went back alive. I never touch anything even the cruise didn't went off. It never lose speed on the highway. But when it went back alive it made a BIG exhaust backfire. A real gun shot! My muffler didn't appreciate this!
Is this an intermittent ignition problem? I think the power is cut for a small time on the ignition. It's like I cut the ignition switch.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Sep-02 AT 08:42 AM (EST)]Had similar problem that drove me up the wall for a long time. Finally found the problem in the factory wiring harnass to the coil. When the wire terminal was installed it was crimped with so much pressure it cut most of the little wires. Electricity was being carried by three or four wires in the whole strand! Once I put on a new wire terminal the problem was fixed. Hope this helps.....
It sounds like either the ignition module is going or your ignition switch is going I had the same problem with my 80 F-350 doing the same thing you meantioned it was a real pita. I thought it was the ignition switch so I replaced that didn't cure it I searched all over to find a loose wires there was none then I was told the modules do fail so replace it so I did and its worked. I could be driving down the road and all of a sudden dead muffler would fill full of gas and have one hell of a backfire but the truck would start up agian if I cranked it. I knew it wasn't carburation problems because it was like some one turned the truck off kinda scary at times you never new when it was going to happen it did it when I was packing 6500 pounds of turf on the deck and climbing a steep hill.
Anyhow I would try replacing the module first its not that expensive and easier to change if that doesn't cure it change the ignition switch its a pain to change not that expensive either.
I've made the check that you suggested. So in the plastic housing that hold the terminals on the coil, there was the red wire that dropped in my hand when I touched it. It was baddly corroded. I've fixed this wire and terminal and put it in place in the housing.
Hope this was the problem, and if not, certainly saves me a trip behind a towing...
I had a problem like that once on an old ford with a VV carb. It would fire up just fine, then after about five or ten minutes, it would just die. Turn the key, it would fire right up, run for five or ten minutes, and die. same thing over and over. Found out the TP sensor wasnt grounded.
