Hi, okay so when I turn my switch from 2 to 4 wheel drive nothing happens... not lights, gear engaging, nothing.....checked fuses, replaced t/c valve but nothing.... any thoughts would be helpful
well most electronical auto locking hubs arent very reliable. my neighbor had an explorer and he had to have the actuator replaced on it 3 times befor he switched out the system to manual locking hubs.
if u wanna have reliable locking hubs, get them converted to manual or u can get a kit that replaces the electric actuator with one that is just spring loaded and it has a cord that runs into ur interior where u can mount a **** that u pull out to lock the hubs to make it 4x4 and push it back in to unlock the hubs. and its supposed to be cheap.
the 86 ranger had that problem, I assumed electrical. so I started with the switch itself, so i pulled that apart, ran voltage and cont. checks on it,e verything was fine... after a few hours of looking, I finally decided to swap the electronic 4 wheel drive motor from the bronco to the ranger (the little motor that turns the pin for 4hi, 4lo, and Nuetral), and it worked fine... swapped the ranger electronic 4wheel drive motor back into it, and nothing..... so it ends up being a $189 dollar part (the motor). unless you can find a recent wrecked one that you know a little history on. I would love to be able to convert to a manual shift 4 wheel drive system, instead of electronic. But as far as I know right now, I can only convert my hubs over to the Warn manual hubs, which I am going to do as soon as I possibly can.

Hi, I had a Ranger that came into the shop one day with exactly the same problem. After hours of chasing wires and such I pulled of the shift motor. I pulled the little round cover off and found that the inside was full of mud and was bent just a little. I cleaned it out and repaired the tangs and it worked great! (so far....lol) Anyway, I hope this helps.
hillbilly.... what round cover did you pull off? the cover from the transfer case, or the shift motor? I was just wondering becuase I tried the shift motor in my bronco, and it didnt work, but if theres a way to pull it apart, i am sure it could be fixed cheaper than buying a new one.

It was from the shift motor. It was where the electrical wires go in and its made of plastic. This is actually where the motor knows what gear it is in. Its kinda like a switch. I had ordered one from the junk yard and it was made differant so I took the one I had apart and looked inside. It was full of junk and the little metal tangs that rode on the wheel inside were bent. I cleaned it out and bent them back down. It worked great for this application. Like I said, the other one was made differant so this fix may or may not work on yours but it may be worth a try!
hey guys....Sorry I didnt specify what this was on before but it's a 99' F250 Super Duty. The last time i used 4 wheel drive was no problem. Now it doesnt work at all. I am really thinking I have an electrical problem with it. Now at the same time i have been having transmission problems and it has been in and out of the shop with that, but i dont think they are related unless the shop broke some wiring with all the R & R they had to do. I did have to troubleshoot and repair a bad Ho2 sensor problem (they didnt plug one back in all the way) Basically if someone knows about other locations for components of the electronic 4 wheel system that would be cool....relays, fuses etc. It's strange to me because the switch doesnt just switch power it doesnt seem. there is a 3 position switch with resistors on the dash making me think that it's connected to the computer somehow (does this seem possible?)
Have a good day and someone magically fix my dang truck!
Most everyone on the site here told me it was more than likely the motor into the transfer case... or the solenoid... or... and ya know, it was a $10 relay under the hood!!!!
In my rig, '00 Excursion... there's two relays by the fuse panel (drivers side, under hood by brake master cylinder)... one of those relays was bad. It took the tech 3 days, many calls, and it never showed on any electrical or diagnostic tester.... they charged me $9.sumthing for the relay... and about $225 for the replacement!!! I couldn't believe it... asked why it's so much and that I'm not going to pay for Ford to learn how to figure out a problem... SHE (my service writer stand in) said the book says 2.5hrs to replace! WHAT???!! You kiddin?!?! It's right on top of the fender well... I can R&R it in about 2 seconds. And that's even after eating a greasy piece of pizza! LOL!
I hope that helps... Or that you have those same relays... I think it's worth the time and $$ to just replace them. I too had NO Lights.. no nada when switching the ESOF switch...
