efi to carb switch
have 86 f150 4x4 302 efi that has been a real problem. switching to a carb. need to know about mech. fuel pump the mounting holes are on the block there seem to be a plug to stop me from mounting can I just punch it out or do I need to drill it out any guess guys. thanks scott
#1. You need to change the eccentric on the front of the camshaft. The efi engines have an eccentric, but it's only half of it. The engines with fuel pumps have a ring that fits around the eccentric. That way the eccentric doesn't rub directly on the fuel pump arm and wear it out. The ring rubs against the eccentric and it has alot more surface area and can hold alot more oil film than the small point on the fuel pump arm.
#2. If you have to go to the junk yard to get the proper eccentric, you might as well get the cover too. You could wittle the efi one out, but what a pain in the butt.
I guess you have a plan for the fuel tank, like getting a carbed fuel tank or modifying the efi tank.
P.S. When I converted an 86 efi 302 engine with an older timing cover, the alignment dowel pins where much larger on the later block than the holes in the old timing cover. I just took a 1/2" drill bit and made the holes larger. Worked fine. The cover I used was from a rear sump bronco engine so, no dipstick tube. If you get a cover from a front sump engine, just cut the dipstick tube off, and bend it over like a tooth paste tube to block it off.
