I have the opposite problem that is typical with the IAC. This time, my wife stalled while driving (not coming to a stop). She then could start the engine, but when she put into gear it would stall every time. If she gave it gas it would stall. I finally was able to get there and push her into a parking lot. I started it and it immediately stalled. Then when I started it, it stayed on but sputtered badly so I rev'ed it up several times and it seemed to "clear out" the problem. I had several miles to drive it and it was running and idling fine. I got on the highway and it responded great to me punching it. However, when I slowed to turn into a parking lot, it sputtered and sseemed to loose power. It then seemed to correct itself until I turned into a parking spot wehere it lost power again. I took her car to work today and it started and ran fine. No issues, both going to and from work. Any ideas...because I really don't want this to happen while she's driving and I'd like to address the root cause. Needs oil change, but that's the only thing outstanding! ANy help is appreciated!!!
No. No codes. I thought the same thing too since my wife filled up that morning. It ran fine for her erands yesterday though. I just got in from driving it around town just now. I ran it through the car wash and just drove around. Seems to be running great. It's got almost 93,000, so I guess it's entitled to act a little strange. One thing I noticed with the hood up is a sound similar to a whole in a muffler. Not sure if I'm imagining things now or not though. I replaced the IAC about 1 year or so agao, so that's the first thing I checked. Seems okay. I wonder if there can be a build up of carbon or deposits or something and when I rev'ed it up maybe I blew it out...I don't know. Thanks for responding!!!
hoganlo,
My second choice is a vac or gasket leak (especially if you hear whole in muffler sound.) I'll assume that the tune-up stuff is okay. These cars seem to be pretty good at detecting faults and capturing codes so the absence of codes leads me to think that the cause is not "hardware". My 97 had, and still gets, its fits once in a while. But with 180k it might be getting senile. I hope you fixed it by driving around, that's the best way!!
