i have an 04 F-250 and am going to upgrade the hitch so i can pull more than the 6000lbs the stock one can do(i don't have weight dist.) i was looking at hitchweb.com and the two that i like are the
HiddenHitch Magnum or
Putnam XDR
both are rated for 15000lbs which is way more than i need but might as well. so my question is which one of these is better? i like these two because they say it will hide behind my stock step bumper. i will be towing my jeep with a dual axel trailer the most but i would like to know i could put anything back there with out a problem.
I have the Putnam on my 89 F-350 and we had them on the company trucks. I've pulled 750 killowatt diesel generators wieghing in at 10,000 lbs wet with out a problem. It wasn't bad putting on the putnam except drilling the holes, after that it was pretty easy. I even didn't have to worry about my spare.
I'm not sure if the Hidden Hitch Magnum is the same thing as the Reese Titan (HH and Reese are the same company). If not, you might want to check out the Titan hitch. It is also rated class 5 for 15,000 and uses 2.5" sq. receiver tube instead of the 2x2 tube. The larger tube enables use of a hitch extension for towing trailers behind campers that stick out beyond the back of the truck. Go to www.reeseprod.com or www.etrailer.com to see it.
Another good one to check out is the Torklift Superhitch. www.torklift.com.
I have the Curt Magnum 14,000 lb rated hitch on my F350 and it was one of the least expensive of the heavy hitters at about $165 at www.traileraccessorysuperstore.com. I personally think the Titan is a better hitch than what I have, but what I have is certainly more than enough for any tag-along trailer most of us will ever tow on a reciever hitch. Anything heavier than that should go on a fifth wheel or gooseneck anyways.

My 89 had to have holes drilled in the frame so I had to. Surprisingly whoever had the truck befor me had never needed one this heavy since they had a fifth wheel installed. Sometime during the late 90 to 2000 they started heat treating the frame rails like on big rigs so they started predrilling for things like hitches.
