Autolite Glow Plugs - Reliable?

1995 F350 Dually 7.3L PSD - I am changing my glow plugs as we speak and bought Autolite plugs. Now I am seeing a bunch of negative responses about using Autolite and that I should use OEM from Ford. Are Autolite plugs really that bad? Should I take them back out and install OEM? I haven't put the valve covers back on just yet so this would be a good time to change my mind. Any comments????

There has been a rash of guys struggling with glow plugs that break off in the head, myself included. Virtually all of the broken glow plugs were Autolites. I recently switched all mine to Motorcraft. They're not only available at Ford, you can also get them from Autozone for about $9/ea.

You should be able to do some searches on this forum and find quite a few threads on this subject. Though I have not had the pleasure of changing mine (YET!) from what I've read on here, the Autolight's suck. Everybody seems to say to stick with the Motorcraft plugs which are actually made by Beru from what I understand.

I changed my glow plugs about 4 months ago. Used oem ones because everyone said they are better. Am i ever glad i did. The ones i removed were Autolites. 3 of them fell apart on me while taking them out!!! Luckily just the guts but there junk in my oppinion. I would go for oem!! P.S. Yes they are made by Beru.

I have a 97 PSD and a 85 6.9. I just pulled out the AC brand of glow plugs on the 6.9, due to poor cold starts, and found one glow plug had the tip burnt. I replace all GP with the Motorcraft plugs. Autozone was under $10 per plug, Ford wanted $17 and change per plug. The guys on the older diesel engines thread had lots of bad experence on the non motorcraft GP, breaking off, burnt tips etc. I figured I visit these sites to learn from others, and most want only the motorcraft brand. I trust the many voices that have replied to many threads.

Count me as another vote for the Motorcraft from AutoZone, or even (dare I say it?!?) the dealership. I have read on several forums of enough problems with Autolites I would run as fast as possible from them.

CLICK HERE to go to an excellent how to article on the glow plug system by Carpentractor.

LINK TO ARCHIVED THREAD I started when I did mine. The link in the thread for Carpentractor’s article does not work any more (Carpentractor moved the article) and the part number for the AutoZone / Motorcraft glow plugs has changed.

Hope these help out - Carpentractor's article helped me a lot.

I have both saved in MS Word if you would like them in that format. If you would like them click on my user name and send me an eMail (NOT A PRIVATE MESSAGE) with GLOW PLUG RELAY in the subject line and let me know what eMail address you would like it sent to and I will reply with the attachments.
