My engine dies after startup, when stepping on the pedal to accelerate and steering. What I did to rectify this problem was to idle for 5 minutes until the needle on the engine temperature gauge points to C (for cold), and only then can I drive away without the engine suddenly dying. But what I need is a faster startup procedure. Waiting 5 minutes every morning or night is a pain in the butt. It's not even that cold out (Seattle, 55+ degrees). Can someone make a suggestion? Also, is this indicative of something wrong with the engine?
I have a 1985 F250 XLT with 460ci engine, 7.5 liters, 4 barrel carbuerator. I'm only getting 6.5 mpg city.
Yes, it stays on high idle after startup; I step on the pedal slightly and release to slow it down. This is the second mention I've had about the choke. Is it hard replacing the choke? The Chilton manual ("Ford Pickups and Bronco 1976-86") I have doesn't mention it at all.
