Question for hotwhlz85...please help

I am attempting a swap similar to what you did (1982 300-6 to a V8 with 4WD and 4 speed manual) except what I thought was a 351W turned out to be a 400. This swap has been a real struggle to find certain parts like the right bellhousing.

My question for you, and I really hope you can shed some light on this, is that the guy installing the engine bolted it up to the tranny and now the engine sits back about 4 inches (valve covers almost touch the firewall) and we're not even close on the motor mounts to cross member perches. I got the perches and mounts from the donor vehicle (a 79 Bronco) so they should be OK. How do I get this motor to fit?

One suggestion was to remove the bolts from the transmission and transfer case crossmember and then mount the motor on its mounts and perches and bolt it up to the frame. Then mark where the trans crossmember goes and bolt it up. Will there be enough clearance for the shift lever and 4WD lever through the floor? Also, I suppose I will need a longer driveshaft for the rear and maybe a shorter one for the front.

Please tell me if this is the way to do this. I am also hoping I won't need anymore oddball parts. I would think a drive shaft would be fairly easy to find or modify to fit.

Thanks for your help,

Alan

Your problem is your engine mounts, the chassis changed in 1980, and, you will need the later style mounts, which will not be easy to find, as the 351M/400 was only offered until 82 or so. You may be able to fangle up something workable out of the mounts you have though.
Good luck.

Yes your problem is your chassis mounts I have done this very swap twice and all you have to do is get the chassis mounts out of any V8 truck from 80-86. It does not matter what V8 it had they were all the same. Just bolt them onto the frame all the holes are already there, set the engine down and adjust yor tranny mount a little and you should be golden.

That's what I was trying to say...
The only V8 that doesn't use the same frame pads is the 460, but, you likley won't be running across one of them anyway...

Alan,
Sorry I didn't see this post until now, I've been rebuilding my computer at home. Thankfully these guys did and stepped in with good info. They're right on concerning the frame changes. The perches from an 80-86 V8 should get you where you wanna be.

Good luck and let us know how the swap goes.

Ron
