does it have a round part sticking out the inside toward the trans? if so it is a bendix box. there are a couple of other differances but i cant recall what they are now.
CleanLX, besides input and output seal leaks there is a O-ring that expands a app 3/16" wide x 3/32" thick nylon band in the cylinder bore. With wear, heat and age the O-ring becomes hard and takes a set as well as the nylon ring wearing, this will let fluid past the piston. With high miles the rack (gear) and sector gear mesh will become loose and let the piston rock in the bore, hard on the nylon seal. There is a rack adjustment. Over tightning the sector (adjustment on the box cover) will make the box feel new but will destroy the cover bushing. Check the cylinder bore for wear and scores. MY Bendix leaked again six months after rebuild and it's like new inside without any wear. It's in the garage to remind me why I sunk over $400 in it. I now run a later Ford box.
that is scary Carl.
To run the Ford box in lieu of the Bendix, did you have to swap much other equipment?
I've read that the columns, shafts, and some other goodies need swap'd out as well.
cleanLX, the Ford box is about 2 1/4" longer, you need the Ford box, column, shaft, firewall mounting plate, pitman arm, left motor perch and new high and low pressure lines. You'll like the newer box, they are not as sensitive at high speed (60+ mph). It's a pain that's why I stuck with the Bendix box and wasted money before doing the swap. Don't forget money and time to paint the newer column. Set the "preload" on the box while on the bench with just the rag joint.
CleanLX, don't forget to use ant-seize on the sector and pitman spline taper, also retorque the pitman nut after driving 20-40 miles. The arm will seat on the taper and the nut torque will become real low.
CleanLX, in your travels, Pick-N-Pull or others get yourself a Ford box, column,
column bracket and pitman arm and store it for the future should the Bendix fail again. It will, you just don't know when. Bendix runs hot, add a large cooler
so the seals and oil will live longer.
