[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Oct-02 AT 05:45 PM (EST)]Could anyone give me advice on whether it's feasable or worthwhile or even possible to convert from a C6 to a 5 speed manual transmission? I have a F250 4X4 with the 6.9 with banks turbo and have plenty of torque to pull a 5th gear if it's something that's not too expensive (vs. the added fuel expense without a highway gear). Any help or advice would be appreciated.
I have gone with the taller tire before however, this seemed to limit my GVW because of sidewall height (rides squishy). I haul a camper and also in the fall haul alot of firewood. As far as the gear change I'm afraid I would lose to much bottom end pull power. This is why I thought about either adding an overdrive or a 5th gear on a manual tranny would be the answer. Let me know.
Changing the tranny would be such a pain in the butt. Also you would need to check the max torque input rating of the 5 speed tranny that you may choose. You only have a 6.9, but it probably could still wreck a normal tranny rated for a gasoline motor.
As far as losing torque, you are right. I don't know about pulling a camper, but out in the woods you could use low range in the transfer case to help out.
Do you want the best of both worlds? If you have the money, buy a gear vendors overdrive unit. They actually have one now that splits the gears. So you can actually get six speeds out of your c6. It's pretty expensive, but when you think about what a tranny conversion would cost, it doesn't seem too bad.
Thanks so much for the info. When looking around I also found an over/under drive from US Gears for about the same price. From reading both of their scripts, it sounds like the US Gear unit would require some engineering changes, do you know anyone that has success with either? Or better put, is either worth the money v. wear and tear/fuel savings?
