Cable Chain question

I'm going to be towing a 3200 lb. toy-box trailer through the Sierra-Nevadas this weekend, using my '04 F-250 PSD 4WD w/ stock tires. Many of the routes are restricted to snow tire or chain equpped vehicles. My questions: Are the diagonal cable chains better for towing than the standard horizontal chains that cross the tread surface at a 90 degree angle? (they certainly are more expensive); and do I need to chain the front wheels also if I run in 4WD?

I know they are a lot smoother and somewhat quieter, but that's all the info I can give you on them. I don't envy you, I would hate to tow that heavy in the snow.
