I own an 88 f350 7.3l idi. The hose from the vacuum pump goes to a kindof 4t junction. From here, one hose heads off to the injection pump, one hose to a coffee can sortof looking thing on the driver side and one other hose goes back to something mounted on the wheel well (passenger side) right beside the vacuum pump.
Can someone tell me what the latter gizmo is and what the coffee can thing is?
my '92 has a "low vacuum alarm" that hasn't been connected in years (if ever). it's mounted on the port side fenderwell - the best description i can come up with right now is that it sort of looks like a carhorn. i'll check my manuals & get back to you.
The thing that has a hose on one side and a couple of wires hooked to it on the other side on the inner fender is a low vacuum alarm sensor. It will turn the brake light on the dash on if you lose vacuum. It is much like a MAP sensor on a gas motor.
There should be a round plastic ball about 4" in diameter on the passenger side inner fender that is the vacuum reservoir. There is also a T in the line before it gets to the reservoir that goes to the heater control panel.
The coffee can looking thing on the drivers side is a vacuum brake booster. It has the master cylinder for the brakes mounted on it and is the reason for the sensor to warn of low vacuum. If you loose vacuum you will have a very hard time getting the truck stopped if you have a load on it. Use both feet on the brake pedal kinda thing. It should have a much bigger hose going to it than the other stuff does.
The line to the IP is the vacuum kick down for the automatic tranny.
