How old were you when you drank your first alcoholic drink? I had one sip of a margarita when I was little, but my parents would go nuts if I had a drink. I can understand their reasoning, but it's not like I want to get drunk all the time, just try it to see what it tastes like. BTW, I'm 20
I've been told that when I was 2, I walked up behind my dad and drank his beer that he had setting beside him on the porch steps. I remember nothing of it though.
6 year old bottle of Black Label Lager that I snitched from my grandparents fridge when I was 15. Didn't have any desire to touch alcohol for a few years after that. But I'm passed that now
At age 12, my grandmother left an empty bottle of gin on the kitchen table. Even though it smelled wierd I knew she drank it, so I tipped it up and let the residual drops trickle down. Yeowww! Did that ever burn the gullet and bring tears to the eyes. I then understood the reference to "firewater".
I loved beer from a very early age, at least that's what my parents tell me. I would go to the refrigerator and grab a beer not realizing I shouldn't until they got smart and started moving it.
As for really drinking I guess I started drinking to "party" at about 14 and going to bars at 16 or 17, primarily because I had several good friends who were 3 years older and that was what they did. I was always the fairly responsible one and didn't want to risk sports. I usually ended up taking care of everyone, especially as I started college. Most of my buddies didn't drink until then and it was a whole new world for them.
I tried it a few times in college. Usually with bad results. Sure, you're happy for a while, but if you dont have restraint you end up worshiping the porcelain god.
Know your limit, dont drive drunk, blah blah blah.
First, a disclaimer- my folks were German. The legal drinking age there is 16 (14 in neighboring, very conservative Switzerland). The legal driving age is 18 in Europe, and my dad always thought it was nuts that in the US kids learn how to drive first, then figure out the drinking thing. He may have had something there.
Anyway, any self-respecting German kid has had a sip of mom or dad's beer before the 1st grade, and I was no exception. (I don't drink now though)
I used to "steal" sips to taste what my parents's had in their liquor cabinet while in junior high school. My dad let me taste some of his beer when younger. Did not like the taste at the time. I still prefer European beers, ales or stouts.
On special occasions, my sister and I had a small glass of wine or had eggnog with rum on Christmas while growing up.
However, I did not really start drinking until after going to College back in 1970. Joined an American Student club for social purposes and went to a couple of keg parties. Since I was driving, I would not drink much and found the others' drinking just to get "dead drunk"/"floored" did not make any sense to me. Dropped that and joined the Foreign Students Club there which a good mix of several nationalities. There I learned to how to drink socially as they did. Found this more to my liking.
First taste of and alcholic beverage that I remember was a bottle of Rolling Rock beer while riding a hay wagon on my cousin's farm after loading the wagon up. Boy did that taste good!
6 years old, got loaded at a wedding and was (attempting) break-dancing...only other thing I recall about that night was the bride giving me a hug apologizing for not dancing with me.
I had a sip of one of mt dad's beer when i was probably 7-9 and i never drank it again until i was 17. When i was 16 however we used to drink Rum and coke, then play dance dance Revolution. It's amazing how much more fun that game is after a lil drink or 2.
back when i was in high school there was no picture on quebec i.d. it must have been a slow friday night when the liquor store guy decided to quiz me and catches me on "mother's maiden name". we've just killed a 12 of beer and my friend is rolling around on the floor laughing while i'm trying to buy a 1 litre bottle of portugese wine with somebody's baptismal certificate. clerk was nice enough about it. said if we could name one of the holy sacraments he'd let us buy some wine
