Hey ya'll. I just finished getting the truck aligned and it's driving really good. Brake check aligned it for $90.00(lifetime alignment) even though they knew about the bad bearings and loose steering box, and unlike Firestone's lifetime alignment I can take my truck back whenever I want for the small fee of $3.00. But that's not the point, I was told my bearings in the front driver's side were bad and needed replacing. Just yesterday the back driver's side also began making an odd sound, which I believe to be the bearings rattling around. I would like to dedicate this long weekend(thanks to Martin Luther) to replacing my truck's bearings. If anyone could give me information on replacing the bearings I would be grateful. Hopefully it won't be too much of a job because the guys plan on going out to Conroe for a camping trip on Sunday. Thanks a lot.
Not too hard of a job, a little messy. Basically have to tear apart the front hub. I'm not going to go into detail because I don't know what kind of hubs your running, but either manual of auto its fairly easy. There is a write-up on this somewhere I will try to find it for you. You'll need a spanner socket and some say snap ring pliers but i used mini needle nose pliers and a pick. Don't forget to buy new seals with the bearings.
I've got a good powerpoint presentation to get you started on the front (it's actually a ball joint replacement but you have to take the hub off in order to do it). The fronts are very easy and may only take you 20-30 minutes to do with the correct tool. Send me a PM/email.Once you get the hub off then you pound the old bearing braces out and tap (carefully) the new ones in.
Not sure about the back bearings...I think you have to take the axels out which means you will need a press...maybe someone can correct me on that???
On the rears, you do need to pull the axles. My truck has a 9" rear end and with it first take off the brake drums then there are 4 nut's, 3/4" socket to fit, behind the axle flange. There is a hole in the flange to put a socket though. 4 nut's off just slide axle out. Then you will need to press the old bearings off and new ones on. Best to replace the seals while you have the axles out.
