fuel gage

Can anyone help me out here?.....I have an 85' F-150...For some reason my fuel gage only seems to work over half a tank.....not sure that there is a half tank in it though...when you fill the truck...it reads full and will work till it reaches half,then goes down to empty....even thiugh its not...gage? sending unit? float?.....not sure what to replace...please help....fast77

Sounds like a typical fuel guage for this era of trucks. Check your wiring. You could try replacing the sending unit. The guage itself in the dash rarely goes bad though.

My 86 has done that since new. 5 gals form full to e and for ever before it ran out. I always have a full 5 gal can in the bed .

I can ride for ever on e and then only put in 8 gals of gas.

fast77, More than likely the sending unit is bad. I had a carbon copy problem with my 82 and it was the sending unit. I took the sending unit apart and the reostat was broken apart where it would not register after a certain point.
