Ringing/hissing sound--help!
I have a 99 V10 that has recently developed a ringing/hissing noise. When the engine is under load, I can hear this ringing sound. It is driving me nuts! When you pull the hood and someone shuts off the engine, you hear what sounds like a "screech from an eagle" (sorry best similarity in sound) coming from the throttle body area.
Any ideas what it could be?? Please help!
Thanks
Tim
The noise you hear while under load is hard to diagnose. It could be a failing carrier bearing making the ringing noise, but we don't have enough info. Tell us all you can about your truck.
The second noise that sounds like a hawk's cry is probably the expansion valve of the A/C system. It's normal. This happens when the pressure is equalizing. However, if it does it all the time, you could have pressure build-up somewhere in the condensor. Check the condensing coil to make sure it's not stopped up with dirt, dust, mud, bird feathers, etc. You know how open the front of these trucks are. You might take a water hose and wash out the condensing coil just in case.
It was a cracked exhaust manifold. Covered under my extended warranty.
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. For particulars, the truck is a 99 F250 V10 with Auto tranny. The truck has never needed service and has been trouble free since new (except for sqeeky front springs). Mileage is only 30,000 miles. Totally stock.
The ringing noise seems to happen most when you are applying throttle while under load. You can not hear the ringing while parked, even when revving the engine. When I pull away from a stoplight etc is when I start to hear it. It does not seem to get worse with speed, and does not change whether the engine is cold or operating temperature. If I let off the throttle while driving the noise stops. Once I apply throttle, the ringing starts again. It is driving me nuts!
At first I thought the fan belt, but again the ringing does not happen at idle. I then thought it sounded like an alternator under load, checked to make sure the battery was charging, and everything was OK.
Any other ideas??
I appreciate any ideas/help you can give!

The ringing noise under load sounds like the heat shield on the "Y" pipe. Get a small hammer and lightly tap on the shield to find out where the tack welds are broken.
Once you find them you can either reweld them or remove the shield as some have done. I wouldn't recommend removing it completely...even though I did and it never effected anything. Still, it has been deemed necessary by Ford, so I can't recommend it.
I can't think of anything else unless the bushings have worn out on the exhaust pipe hangers - or something related to that.
Did you confirm the expansion valve screech?
I had a similar sound, never at idle, only under load. Changed the V-Belt, had the alternator checked etc. nothing seemd to help. Drove me cracy too!! Finally took it to my service guy and it turned out that the sound was resonating from the Transmission. Apparently something called the "Coast gear C Clip" had broken and the pan was full of metal shavings.
