Anyone know a way to fix it? Short of replacing the pump I have tried everything I can think of. I tried flushing the system with power steering fluid, then atf neither made any difference on the amount of noise the dang thing makes and its driving me nuts. Yes the fluid level is correct and yes I made sure there was no air in the system. Got any other ideas?
They all do it(well a few got lucky) just the way they are. You could switch over to a Saginaw pump, that'll get rid of it and I hear it steers a lot easier with them. I'll be switching soon.
Does it whine all the time or just when you turn the wheel? My '93 302 4x4 makes an audible noise when I turn the wheel and I think it might be a normal pump noise.
It whines all the time, really irritates my when I start it and leave it running and go back in the house and can still hear it. Can anyone elaborate on the saginaw pump swap?
If it whines all the time there is a problem internally. Probably a slight misalignment due to wear. Lots of miles on the truck? An oil additive would be my first try at solving the problem.
Try to locate from what area of the pump the sound is coming from. Use a wooden broom handle as a sound amplifier by placing one end of the wood tightly on various places on the pump (bearing positions) and the other end tight against your ear canal. Plug your other ear. Be careful so the pump end of the wood does not slip off and get to somewhere it should not be. As long as you have the wood in your hand give a listen to ALL other rotating things under the hood. Maybe, just maybe, the sound is coming from something else. Rots o' ruck.
