these are all labor charges, all your new parts are more, I got new rods but you could have your reconditioned(more labor), need new pistons, rings, bearings, freeze plugs, cam and lifters(recommended), timing chain, oil pump and pick up tube, rod bolts and main cap bolts and all new gaskets. This is just the short block you still need to do the heads, should give you an idea though.
When rebuilding an engine, you can NEVER know just how extensive the rebuild will be until you take it apart. When you start micing cylinder walls, and crankshaft, then you'll know more.
To begin with, why are you rebuilding it? Have you done a compression and cylinder leakdown test?
go for the 408 stroker ... it will cost some eXtra cash but it is really worth it... a good rebuild on the 351 will set you back about a grand. is it a EFI or CARB?
I got my re-build kit from Summit. She is completed and runs incredible. The kit was around $470. It came with everything needed for a complete re-build minus the cam.
Al
my trucks efi. it could use it but she's still a beast. I've just been curious what it would cost me to do the job. I probably wont being doing this soon i've got other things i wanna do first.
I don't even know if anyone could tell you how much it would cost.
My project ended up being more than twice as much as I expected.
Usually, ya get a rough idea how much it will cost, then double that figure to get a more realisitic one. You'll get nickled and dimed to death on projects like these, even just the gas to the machine shop somewhat counts.
I rebuilt the 351 W in my truck over the summer and I was suprised it didn't cost more. I had the entire engine together for $1300 and that includes a $570 Edelbrock power pack (intake, carb, cam+lifters). I had the block and heads cleaned, new valve guides, new crank and cam bearings, magnafluxed heads, new +.030 pistons, full ring set, the cylinders bored, and the pistons intstalled on the rods all for a little over $650 including the labor. If you shop around, you will be able to find a good price. Try to find a nice family owned place; they always do an outstanding job and they rarely overcharge. As for the 408 in. stroker idea, check with Summit for the crank because I believe it was only $dollars as well. Make sure to take it to the machine shop to get the proper clearances though.
my PAW stroker was a complete short block listed for $2495! with worked heads it was $2995 that was in '99! the new '04 catalog does'nt list a 427, it is replaced by a 408, 418,(the difference being the bore) the new 408/418 have a 4340 steel crank now. i think the price is still the same, the catalog is at dads house,he is looking to order the 408 for his '87! which is not a bad price bad for a complete block assembly!i don't think you can peice it together your self for less.
...IFyou decide to go this route let me know! i'll share some pointer's i learned for dabbling with mine! it is really a GOOD engine!
