I really want to learn how to rebuild a motor. and i figure the only way i will learn is to do it. I own a 75 ford 3/4 ton with a 390 with a 4 speed tranny and want to build something to replace the tired motor in it. My question is, what are my options in terms of picking a motor that will mount up prefectly? and also from that group of motors that will work which do you recomend and why? As of now im not looking to do a radical build. just looking to learn how to do it first. Remember i am only 18 and have limited funds. thanks for the advice and hope to get a motor and start working soon.
Steve Christ's book which you can buy in the parts shop here would be a great investment for you. He walks you through every step and tells you what parts will interchange. Even gives the torque settings and clearances.
Yep since funds are limited as advised pull the 390 and rebuild it. The 390 will give you plenty of power. Pickup a copy of "How to rebuild big block Ford engines" by Steve Christ. Read through it a few times and question things you don't understand before you start. This will give you a good understanding of how to go about things. There are plenty of guys here to help you along the way also. With a little time and patience you can do it. G.
i have never read the book but it sounds good i rebuilt my 428 in a few days just from some basic knowalge of 4 cycle engines not much to them you have a block rods crank cam heads pushrods valves timing chain and a few other things
