Last weekend I was occasionally getting a nasty clunk taking off in reverse. I haven't heard that since, but something else today. Now, sometimes if I accelerate and then let off, I get a "bump" (and clunk) like I ran over something. It sure doesn't sound or feel good :-( . Does this sound like a rear end going out? I'm getting no other unusual noises from it.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Sep-02 AT 04:57 PM (EST)]There is no way to guess. You will have to get under there and push and pull on everything. Chock the wheels and take the tranny out of gear, and with the truck off, check the driveshaft. Check at the rear diff for play. The large nut in the end of the input to the diff may be loose. Check for excessive play in the rearend. Compare the play to another vehicle and make a judgement call if yours is too much. If all else fails, lock the parking brake, and get somebody in the truck to put the truck in fwd and then reverse while you carefully WHILE NOT GETTING UNDER THE TRUCK look to see if you can see any excessive movement in the suspension.
Thanks franklin, I went out and checked the play. I have about 5/8" play all in the rear end (none when in gear), compared to my '95 which has about 1/8" play to it. Nothing else under there is loose or anything, so it has to be in the drivetrain. This "bump" was pretty violent, I actually looked in the mirror thinking I ran over something when I felt it. It has 207,xxx miles on it, but I thought rear ends generally lasted a long time.
I had that happen one time, in a car I had, when I was coming home from work on the interstate. There was a bump like I ran over something, and then the rear got noisy. I made it home and went around back of the car. There where oil spots all over the back and it was gear oil. I looked under the car and there was a hole knocked in the side of the housing. When I took it apart, I found that a tooth had broken off the pinion gear, and had shot right through the casting of the diff.
