Lifter noise

I have a '99 F150 5.4 with 110,000. When it's started I hear what sounds like quite a bit of lifter noise. Does anyone know of any solutions to this problem? Or does anyone else hear this too?

My 99 5.4L with 96K miles does the same thing. I heard it was cold engine knock or piston slap. Not sure what it is. Mine seems to go away after 30 seconds to a minute of driving though.

Exhaust leaks can cause the same sort of noise too. Usually they get quieter after running a few minutes. The common place for a leak is the passenger's side exhaust manifold. The studs that hold it to the head break.
