no chipped keys for Superduty as far as I can tell. The stealership owes you money. Is your Key a big huge black colored key? I doubt it. If it is not a big huge black plastic key then you don't have a chip. Time to call the factory to complain and call the attorney general who should have a division to handle consumer complaints. The tow truck operator is just wrong too, no need to remove driveline, like previous posts, flatbed, dolly, or even on front wheels would work without driveline removal.
My Excursion does indeed have "SecuriLock® Passive Anti-Theft System", which is the chipped key. My info above is good providing your vehicle has this.
I just went through the features at the Ford site and am amazed that the SD's do not have this feature. I would be big-time annoyed at the expense that you had to go through due to misinformation. Is the chipped key an option maybe?
Excursions and F-150s have chipped keys, S/D pickups (250/350) do not. A chipped key will work in a S/D, it just isn't doing anything. The one sure way to tell: is there a red flashing "theft" light on your dash when the truck is off? If so, then you have an anti-theft system that requires a chipped key. No flashing light? No need for a chipped key.
ok, looks like i started a good thread. heres the fact about what happened at the shop. the shop call me about 30 minutes later and said my truck was done. i went down there to pick it up expecting to pay about $160 for the new keys and a reprogrammed theft system and to my surprise the guy was like $36.59. so i asked him if he had to reprogram anything and he was like NO all you have to do for your truck is cut the keys. i was pretty mad since i could have had them just cut me a key and not had to have the tow truck. sometimes i wish ford would get it together.

Personally I'd fight them for the tow cash. Towing 'taint cheap...
My 2003 F-250SD looks just like the one for my 96 Explorer Sport that I know is not chipped. I would be surprised if your key SD key is chipped. I would get back to the dealer and confront the service manager. Better yet the General Manager and threaten to report them to Ford. That will likely cause them a good deal more grief than going to the state with this.
as far as a "chip key", if you look at the top of the key it has an offset hole. Meaning where the key ring goes thru it, its to one side. another give away is the little rectangular cutout at the base of the key shaft. thats where the "transponder" hides. I hope this bit of info will help others.
