adding heated seats to 99 eb

I have a 99 eb, and although I live in Texas and have remote start on my car I still cant help but want to warm up faster (yes I know texas winters with a pre-heated car, Im a wuss). I originally wanted to just completely switch my seats over to the heated ones (should have come with the EB package, even my mom's 03 EB doesnt have them), then reading on here I saw someone say they installed the rostra seat heaters. Now those aftermarket seat heaters do seem like a pretty good idea (pricing would be good to know, would like to have this be a relatively cheap project), I got sorta curious if I could get some heaters out of seats from a junkyard or ebay and swap/frankenstein them into my seats. Would this be safe/possible/cost effective? What parts would be needed? and also what does the seat heater control even look like on the old expys?

Thanks,
Jeff

Thumbs down

For what it is worth, I would try to come up with something aftermarket.

My experience with the factory heated seats is that they are more trouble then there worth (97-2002 models anyway)

Our driver seat quit working shortly after I purchased the vehicle.
Dealer fixed it under warranty (They had the truck for a week)

After geting the truck back 6 months later the passenger seat was not working and the drivers seat again about 3 months later. This is a common problem if you search the forums

The wires in the heating pad commonly break. I did repair mine by splicing them back together (IF you want to replace the element you pust buy ENTIRE SEAT PAD). My drivers side stoped working again last week.
I too have wondered about going with some aftermarket heating pad and making it fit.

Can you share the procedure for getting access to the heater wires? Does the seat need to come off?

procedure

The seat must come off from the seat frame. The reason for this is to remove the leather cover.
Once you peel the cover back( you wll need to cut the hog ring out) you will see a little burn mark in the heating element (it is toward the back in the seat pad grove.) You can pull the wire out and soder it back togther.

Thank you,

Can you tell me if the seat needs to be removed from the floorboard in order to remove the seat from the seat frame?

No, you can just remove the Nuts that hold the seat to the frame.

I am not sure if aftermarket is easier than finding something out of a wrecked Expy. What about the wiring harnesses? I imagine that you would also need the panel on the side of the seat.
I want to say there must be more than one heating pad in the seat, b/c it feels like my lower back warms up also.
Here is a link that I posted on last year. It references another forum where there is an excellent post on removing the seat and working (testing) on the heated seat.
