inline 6 stalling problem

inline 6 stalling problem

Hello,

I have an 88 f-150 I6 4.9L (manual) with a stalling problem. Initially the Truck would stall while running, and in bad weather. Since then I have put on new plug wires, a new rotor cap and master plug as well as an ignition module. The EGR in my truck was replaced in 1998.

Now my problem is a lot more mild, When I first start it up it will idle @ 1500rpm.. drop to 500rpm after a few seconds and run really rough and stall. After a few restarts it will finally run with the check engine light on.

I extracted the codes and they are:

Key on engine off codes
24 67

Computer Memory Codes
14 41 51

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

go to autozone or advanced autoparts, i forget which, they plug something into the computer if 88s got one i have no idea, i have a 88 but i have no idea, but the people at advanced plug something into the computer and if you check engine light is on, they tell you what the computer says is wrong. all for free too.

i dont know how it works, but ive seen them do it, they plug a little box with a screen and buttons on it into your vehicle computer and it sends their computer a code, and they tell you whats going on.

24 -- ACT out of self test range. You need to warm the truck up to operating temperature prior to running a KOEO test. If it was warmed up, test your ACT sensor.

67 -- NDS open or AC high. Make sure you turn off the AC and defrost prior to running the test. If that doesn't help, try running the test with the clutch pedal depressed and the trans in neutral.

14 -- PIP circuit failure. Possible TFI module or Pickup Coil problem. Possible wiring problem. Possible bad grounds. Clear the codes and see how fast this code comes back, if at all.

41 -- HEGO indicates lean. Check your fuel pressure.

51 -- ECT sensor fault, or circuit open. Clear out the memory codes and see if this one comes back. It might explain the cold start issues. Suspect bad coolant temp sensor or wiring to same. The only perplexing thing is the lack of a KOEO fault in the sensor -- if it is truly bad, or the wire has fallen off, it should be flagged on KOEO as well.

wow thanks a lot, I did do the KOEO test cold and I didn't have the clutch pedal depressed so that explains a few.

I will do as you suggested and hopefully all goes well.
