Probably. Did you mark the position of the distributor and rotor before you removed them? Did you turn the engine over or move it between the time the dizzy was removed and then replaced? Did you realign the distributor?
i didnt mark anything i just took out dizzy and put new o ring in then put back on dizzy whith out marks i screwed up can i take it to a shop and will they be abale to time it with a light? i tried turning the dizzy then turning over engine but it wont start it ran fine before i took out dizy... thanks for your help ...
A timing light won't help to start out. You need to find top dead center on the engine. The easiest way is to pull out the #1 spark plug and carefully stick a screwdriver in the hole and turn the engine by hand. When the screw driver comes out as far as it will the piston is at it's highest point. Now check to see if the TDC mark on the damper is lined up with the timing pointer. If it is then you are at TDC. If not you must turn the engine through one more revolution until the screw driver goes down and comes back up again. Now you will be at TDC. Remove the distributor and and reinstall it so that when you have it seated down where it should be the rotor is pointed to where the #1 wire in cap would be. I assume you have a Ford electronic ignition. Turn the distributor just enough to line up the star wheel prong on the center of the distributor shaft with the pickup which is fixed in position on the distributor plate. This should have you close enough to start the engine. Now you can use a timing light to get it exact.
