I have a 1998 F-150 with the shift on the fly 4 wheel drive and I cann't keep that stupid thing working. It is always disengaging while I am using it and then won't go back in for a while. I am sick of this. Is anyone else having this problem and how have you seemed to fix it? your input is very much appriciated. Thank you. Eddie
The only thing I could help you with would be check the connection which takes about half a sec. Just pop off the peice of trim that the shift on the fly **** is on and check connection on back. It kinda a long shot though cause it sounds more electrical than just a loose connection right there, but might as well try it. If you push the A/C vents on that dash peice all the way to one side it'll give you a spot to grip instead of risking scratching the dash with a screwdriver. It just pops off no screws or nuthin.
I would also check the vacuum hoses that go down to the shift motor on the front axle. There are 2 vacuum solenoids on the firewall, near the battery. Check the hoses there too to make sure they are in good shape and connected properly.
I had the same problem. When I put my vacuum guage on the vacuum line at the axle turned out i only had 5 inches of vacuum or less my fix was the solenoid on the firewall by the battery i gave it a tap with a hammer and full vacuum. replaced it and all is good. I also had to change the vacuum lines i had a crack in one but that happened a month later. So i would check for good vacuum at the axle.
