I have a 2000 SD CC 4x4 (70k miles) that is white with a silver lower color. I hand washed my truck this weekend and noticed 100s of little rust specs all over the sides of the truck- some even on the tailgate in both colors. It seems that most of these came off with a great deal of scrubbing and rubbing, but not 100%. Any idea what these are? I have seen them on the truck before, but only in small quantities- not like this
Any ideas what causes these? Is it harmful to the paint? Are there any problems with the paint? Is there any way to prevent it?
I have noticed these on my 2001, did you use a cleaner wax to remove them or a fine cutting wax? I look forward to hearing if anyone else has this problem and how they got rid of them if possible.
I'm not a specialist or anything guys, but I was wondering if maybe a good buffing to the truck would take the spots away. I would guess if you used a decent buffing/polishing compound and buffing wheel, you could clean the spots up easily. Not sure what they are caused by...anybody know for sure?
I've herd of beening called fall out, anyway my wife's focus had it just weeks after we got it. Use clay bar, works great. i use it on my new 04 f250 the paint is smooth as glass.
Where do you get "clay bar" from?? Is this something commonly used in a body shop?? I'm not familiar with it, but I am interested in trying it...
Yeti,
My truck is almost 5 years old and has 70,000 miles on it- do you think the "Rail Dust" would still be affecting it?? I polished the truck several times over the summer- would it still come thur if it had a couple of layers of polish on it?? Is there any way to remove the "rail Dust"
I buy the clay bar at Kragen or autozone, It's not like buffing or rubbing out the paint. You just spray the lube (comes with the clay bar) and glide the bar over the paint.with little or no presure.
I had this happen to my 2003 F-250, now I notice it on my 2004 F-350. After carefull examination I have found out that they are not rust but little specks of tar. Using the clay bar on the black truck with the little specks caused swirl marks. They swirl marks dont seem to show up as bad on the white one.
Rail dust "rust blooms" won't always show up right away.
I clayed my '05 Excursion less than a week after delivery...while the truck was about 10 days old...and the amount of dirt and junk that came off into the clay was amazing.
You can buy "Clay Magic" at an auto parts store. My waxing ritual involves a wash with Dawn blue and a dash of baking soda. Then, claying with claybar. I sue a mixture of 12 ounces or water with half a capful of car wash soap as the lube in a spray bottle.
