Starting Trouble Newbie

Please help. I'm new to Fords and completely ignorant of their tendancies and such.

Here's the vehicle:

1983 Ford Bronco
351 small block
C 6 tranny

The Bronco has trouble starting. It fires immediately after turning over, but seems to make only one revolution and dies.

Then, after it starts, it often dies when I put it into gear. Also some hesitation if I gun it from a stand still.

It doesn't matter anymore if it is warm or cold, although when the problem first started it only did it when it was warm.

Once it starts and I have let it run for a few minutes, it runs well. Plenty of power, doesn't get hot, fuel effeciency is normal.

I changed the plugs this weekend, and will replace the coil, cap, rotor and plugs next weekend.

If this doesn't fix my problem, what next?

Is adjusting the timing pretty straight forward?

By the way, this morning, it was very cold and the Bronco started perfectly. Ran well, then I restarted it

Well I wouldn't worry it sounds like your problem isn't to complicated. It sounds to me like the carburator needs a rebuild or to be replaced. The starting problem sounds like choke and mixture problems and the hesitation is probably the accelerator pump on the carb. I would suggest that you get a manual for it both the Haynes and Chiltons are good for these trucks, it will give a step by step process for your timing although it is not hard to adjust but it helps to see the pictures rather than my descriptions, though I don't think your timing is far off if at all. And it never hurts to change plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Nov-02 AT 03:20 PM (EST)]I changed the plugs this weekend. I ran out of time to do anymore. The cap and rotor and plugs will be next weekend.

Someone suggested to me that it might be the ignition module.

Funny though, the car starts perfectly when it is cold outside, regardless of the engine temperature.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Nov-02 AT 09:09 PM (EST)]400M hit it on the head.. I'd bet carb for sure..sounds like your choke/fast idle setup is shot...

I was experiencing the same problems with the same motor and a new Holley fixed her right up.. A carb rebuild may be cheaper but a new model 1160 is only about 225....

Alpine stereo with 400W Jensen Amp and 2 x 300 Watt "boom boxes" behind seat - 2 x 180 watt Xplod's in the doors..

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Nov-02 AT 09:15 PM (EST)]Gotta agree with them. Since it runs good until warmed up then goes south on you, my bet is the carb as well. The plugs, wires, and distributor cap probably could use changing (since you're thinking of doing that anyway). But I agree that it's gonna take carb work to get you happy again.

By the way, welcome to FTE.

Good luck,
Ron

What about doing a swap for a 4 bbl? Any suggestions? I definitely go with a dual plane intake, probably the cheap edelbrock. What carb though?

Any complications with this swap?

I see some used Ford four barrel carbs on eBay quite a bit, but how do I know what size they are? I think I'd want something around a 650 or so, right?
