I am looking into purchasing an Excursion but I have heard that the front axles on them and the SD trucks are weak. Any truth to that? Any pointers for me before I attack the market?
All Excursion & SD have a 5200lb at ground rating regardless if they are a D50 or D60.
The D50 is weaker than the D60 since the axle shafts are necked down and the spline count is less.
The choice for an avid 4-wheeler considering an Excursion to lift and run big tires would be to look for a 2002 or above since they wear a D60 front axle.
If you are not planning on lifting and 4-wheeling then the D50 will suffice.
