Here's what we know:
Model: 1955 F-100 modified with an aftermarket 4WD set up (manual locking hubs on front).
Here's what we don't know:
How to get to the front brakes.
Thus far, we have managed to get to the bearing by removing the manual hub locking mechanism. It looks like I need a 2-1/2" special socket (a standard one won't reach the bearing lock nut) to pull the hub off.
Is there another way to get to the brakes or is this it?
Does it have a inner and outer lock rings with a washer between them? If so, the ring is a lock ring with a tab that's bent over to keep things from moving. Bend it back flat and then see if you can get the proper socket to remove the nut. If not, you can try a chisel or flat bladed screw driver to GENTLY tap the nut counterclockwise to remove. Do this just enough to loosen, then remove by hand. Remove lock ring and repeat for inner nut. The drum should come off by pulling and wiggling it to get the seal off the spindle.Make sure the brake shoes are adjusted down so the drum will come off. Try to get the socket before you do this. It always works better with proper tools. Go to a GOOD auto parts store and inquire about a socket for a 4wd front axle in the size you need. They're not cheap, but worth the investment.
The real tricky part is getting the hubs back on with the proper bearing preload. I would recommend getting a socket, Torque Wrench, And a 4X4 shop manual, and following the bearing preload instructions to the letter. Too much preload and the bearings will burn up, too little and the wheel won't be tight and bearing failure will again be the result. "Good Luck"
