I test mine @ every oil change. I usually don't have to add SCA very often. Just remember to get your sample from the radiator petcock & not the overflow bottle. The strips don't have much of a shelf life. (About a yr)
I buy 3-4 @ a time either online (ShopDiesel.com) or pick them up @ an International Dealership if I happen to be near one. These are cheap Insurance against Engine Damage.

Why should the test be at the petcock and not the overflow bottle?
The overflow bottle works fine, as coolant is circulated through it during normal operation. But you need a forceps or needle nose pliers to hold the test strip down far enough to reach the coolant level for 20 seconds. The bottle is the only place to add SCA, and after adding some it quickly becomes apparent that the coolant is circulated, and doesn't just sit there like in a normal overflow bottle. Otherwise the coolant in the bottle would stay red for a long time.
Overflow bottle that was my thinking as it is circulated, and yep forceps or needlenose pliers.
I have heard of FW-16 and the DC4A from fleetpride, but I've been using the "Penray" addative. Pencool 3000 w/Stabil-Aid: Cooling System Treatment and Stabilizer along with the Penray 2-way glycol and nitrite test strips for heavy duty coolants. Purchased at local heavy truck supplier and of course it does not say on the bottle that it conforms to anything...
Is this acceptiable or should I dump coolant and switch to the fleetpride strips and the DC4A or whatever fleetpride calls it? Possibly I have answered my own question, just go with what is recommended.
I've always followed what's on the back of the Fleetguard Test Strip card: Quote: 1. Collect coolant sample from the radiator drain or petcock. Do not collect from the coolant recovery or overflow system. Coolant must be between 50deg & 130 deg F when tested. Room temperature is preferred.
Next time I test (in about a week or so when I do an oil change) I'll check samples from both sources and see if there is a difference. It'll be interesting to see if there is a difference between the two. I've always just followed the directions.
