The development you talk about is certainly food for thought- I plan to eventually retire, and I wouldn't want to get caught in an area of spiralling taxes when I'm on a fixed income. BTW, $250K for a decent size new house would be cheap in our part of FL. My brother in law lives in western Richmond- almost Goochland county. Prices there are insane- $500K for new houses. I have a friend out west in Lynchburg VA who's workin' on me. Real estate is much cheaper there. I worry it may be too COLD though!

FLgargoyle,
MY brother in law just bought a house out in Farmville last month. He got a TREMENDOUS deal on his house. 4 acres, 2300 sqft, 2 car garage, gorgeous home for 189K....like I said before - AWESOME deal. If I were closer to retirement, I would certainly be looking towards Lynchburg/Farmville area. Snow and ice isn't that much of a problem out there. They may get a couple of more inches of snow than I do in Isle of Wight but not that much of a difference. It's not Chicago!!!

My son 18 year's old own's a place in Drakes Branch, Va. 50 acers & a log cabin , just south of Keysville & 20-30 miles north of South Boston , Va where the Burton boy's live [Nascar] . Land is fairly cheep between South Boston, Va & Farmville,Va. 50 +Acres & House Barn for a lot less. These buy's won't last, just because you have the land you won't need to use it all . It's just nice to know if you have it & don't realy need to use it but, it is a great buffer .

A junkyard for sale?!!! My dream and my wife's nightmare all wrapped up in one! I like the idea of having 'excess' acreage. I once tried to get the rest of my family interested in buying a really big piece for a 'family compound'. It would be nice to have a little extra to sell in a time of need, or to set my son up with a good start when we get fitted for a pine suit. That area around South Boston does seem reasonable; I might look at the adjoining area of NC and see what the taxes and stuff might be like as compared to VA.
