Why is the 6.0 (05 PSD) so loud when cold, sounds like a lifter in a gasser? If a diesel has a valve train issue, how on earth would you find it?
Running Rotella 15-40 at 1/2 the dipstick, not using block heater, no other mods (yet), seems normal when fully warmed.
Is there a reason why this engine is so loud when cold but evens out when warm..... I tried another dealer lot vehicle but the outside temp was ~50F and it was much quieter and more even than mine (from that mornings start-up at home).
I get the same thing at about 40 degrees or so. Seems normal. Have four other diesels for work, 2 f-650s, F-350. and a gm 6.5. All do the same when its cold.
Thanks for the inputs, however, to clarify, this noise is valve train rate (1 cylinder). The knocking is at about 2x per second at 1000 RPM. 1000RPM / 60 is ~16x per second, so this is valve or single cylinder related (1000/60/8 = 2Hz). I am guessing that it is a lifter (my expedition had a bad lifter when new, so I'm sensitive to this). There is no cam operated fuel pump on the 6L PSD. The noise goes away in sound level rather abruptly when the engine temp (coolant) hits operating (thermostat) temperature. Changing the oil (@900 miles made no difference = likely not lifter).
I'm thinking that there may be an injector that is at issue? May also be a bad glow plug (there is no other change when the glow plugs are shut down by the ECM)? I don't know what the symptoms of either would be (new to 6L PSD). No codes based on 'check engine light'.
Diesels are really **LOUD** when cold. The 6.0 is just as loud as any other diesel when cold, which comes as more of a shock because it's quieter than previous Powerstrokes when warm. Mine doesn't usually make that "couple of cylinders are louder than the others" kind of noise until about 0 degrees F, but it may just be the nature of this diesel. You should take it in, but don't be surprised when they say no trouble found. Obviously you can help things by using the block heater when possible.
Just a thought - My 04 was not nearly as loud upon very cold startup (0-15 degrees) as the new 05. The difference that I may have had something to do with is last year I ran Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic oil and this year the 05 has regular Motorcraft 15w-40. It doesn't really need an oil change but I may change it anyway and will let you know if this makes a difference.
Winterized fuel can help as well, not enough additive the fuel will be thicker and not burn quite right. It has been +20 to -15 here lately and mine will get loud on a couple of cylinders but only for a minute or two. I figure this is from fuel in the lines gelling a little bit since it goes away so quick. So try some antigel additive and see what happens.
Thanks for the inputs, I will be taking it in to the dealer to make sure there is no issues. I'm concerned because it is a single cylinder at issue, not just cold noise overall.
Is there a general preference on injector cleaner/additive?
I have use both Stanadyne and Power Service. PS is easier to find, usually at Wally World. I prefer Stanadyne. More bang for the buck. You use less per tank of Stanadyne for the same results. I get Stanadyne off the Internet at http://www.dieselpage.com/additive.htm.
