air pressure

i have a 99 explorer sport and have been getting about 15-17 mpg around town, but my last few tanks i have only been getting about 13 mpg. this is a problem for me beacause id like to get the best milage i can. i was wondering if htis sudden drop in gas mileage could be a result of not enough ait pressure in my tires. my question is what is the best amount of air pressure to have in my tires?

thanks
Davis

There should be a sticker somewhere on the truck - most likely on the drivers door jamb that has the recommended tire pressure for your truck. I take it exactly as that - recommended pressure. My 94 recommeds 26 psi. When I run at 26, the tires look almost flat and they squeal around every single corner. I usually run about 35 psi with no signs of over inflation wear.

I have a 97 and I run 33-35 psi. No unusual wear, but it can be a little jolting if you hit a good bump or pothole.

When they say the ride is a bit rough at 35 psi they are not kidding. My 97 rode well until about 28 or 29 psi. Ford I believe recommended 30 after the firestone fiasco. Beyond 29 or 30 I found the ride way too rough especially from the rear suspension. Radial tires always look kinda flat. That is why they invented tire pressure guages. Get one and use it!
