hey all,
i got an 89 crown vic 351 windsor so i guess i don't belong here, but you guys seem to know everything, so i thought i'd give it a shot. i just swapped a variable venturi carb for a 4 barrel holley, and i think my aod kickdown lever (even with the extension) isn't extending far enough down to drop gears. other than that, it seems ok, but in testing it on the highway, i entirely lost my o/d. i still get enough power in o/d to maintain speed and accelerate very slowly, but the engine mostly just revs like it's in neutral. if i put it into 3rd it seems to run fine. if anybody can tell me what is wrong, what i can do, or if i can still drive it, i'd be very grateful.
By not having the TV cable adjusted correctly you ran the overdrive without enough pressure to hold it. That burned the band. If you keep driving you'll lose third gear next.
That cable MUST be adjusted correctly or the trans will fail, as you found out.
hey thanks a lot, that sounds about right. how difficult and/or expensive is it to replace the overdrive band? also, before i swapped the carbs, the o/d was already slipping a bit. it would kick into o/d, but then i would get no power and the car would slow down until it kicked back into 3rd, so it was a speed up, kick into o/d, coast down, shift back into 3 type deal. i don't know if that makes things any clearer.
thanks again for the help
