freeze plug leak

I am about to change my headers out (bassani) and know there a freeze plug leak under my drivers motor mount. Any tips on changing this plug out? Seems its the toughest freeze plug to get to and the motor mount will have to be removed . I know from a search - post states take the engine loose on that side (where?)and then says take the two bolts that hold the motor mount to the block loose ,you should now be able to to take the whole mount out and out of the way. Haynes show changing the plug with the engine out only . All tips would be appreciated TR

I am not looking at one at the moment, so I am not sure if you have enough room to do the following trick - but if you can, use your cordless drill to screw a long drywall screw into the bad plug and you can use that as something to grab and pull with pliers; hopefully it won't be too tight.

For installation of the new one, use one of those rubber freeze plugs with a nut on the end that you tighten up to seal instead of trying to tap a new brass one in.

Freeze Plug

JBRONCO i was more concerned on removing the motor mount if i had to lift the engine or not? Also the search i found sez undo the engine on that side (where)mount? I was told by a mechanic friend when installing the new plug find the longest extension to tap the plug with an under size socket smaller than the plug it self .if i did use the same kinda freezeplug not the one u suggested .It looks like a pain to even get to the other bolt( motor mount_(on the radiator side) to unbolt that one from the block. tr

I'm not sure what your question is then. The advice about tapping the new plug in is correct, if you use the same type of plug.

As far as the motor mount, and jacking up the motor - you will have to have a jack under the motor anyway if you are going to remove the mount, so it should not matter if it needs to be jacked up as you will be ready. It would help to have someone working the jack while you maneuver the mount.

If you can get or if you have a engine hoist, hook on to the intake. Unbolt the engine mounts at the frame, then lift the engine until mounts clear the frame and then unbolt the mount at the engine. It may be ezer to change the headers with the mounts out, I don't know, no headers on my Bronco. When you are lifting the engine watch your hoses and coolant lines on the radiator, don't pull them to hard.

freeze plugs

I appreciate all your input Jb and bertha, seems my freeze plugs are ok.I was more concerned about the clearance on my new edelbrock manifold,( the upper leaves not much room to clear the fire wall.) This leak has been brought up before in this forum a few years ago. It is leaking anti freeze (truck sitting 3 or more days)from the bell housing. Spent some time looking and traced it back to the timing cover right port. The leak is minor (size of a 50cent piece(summer no leak)Strange i know butt will look into that matter when i change the timing belt etc in the future .This leak had occured for the past several years. I drive it dailey doesnt leak Hmmm winter fall and summer .The drip follows the drivers side oil pan picking up slim (oil residu). Any one had it follow that and good luck. TR
