i was changing the damper and check the timing chain and found that is was kind of loose and since im going to buy a new one,im also changing the cam which is probably as old as the timing chain.i need suggestions on brands,i just know about edelbrock rpm or comp cams.i currently have a performer rpm manifold and 670 truck avenger carb.
There are a lot of options. but for the sake of a starting point. go to cranecams.com and check out the 343901 and the 343941. Unless you want to change a lot of valve train parts, you might stay with something reasonable like the 343901. You could probably run the 941 on stock stuff, but it better be in good shape. Optimal performance will come with matching springs.
Compresion ratio is an important factor. look at the cam descriptions for more useful info.
the 901 says 9.5 compression ratio and for what i know i have 10.6.the 941 says 2000 to 5000 rpm,the edelbrock rpm says 1500-6500 rpm,is that just for selling or for real?
If its the 428CJ, you really have to watch the compression ratio and match the cam to that. 8.0 - 9.5 for the Crane 343901, and 8.75 - 10.75 for the 343941. Realistically I'd use the 901 up to 9.5, and the 941 from 9.5 to 10.75.
I am running the 941 with stock valvetrain components and have yet to see a problem. However, you do want to get the matching Crane valvesprings.

I am running the Crane 901 in my FE, do you think I will be alright with stock valve springs? I am worried that I may float a valve at high rpms. I am also running stock rocker arms and pushrods, no problems yet. The only thing Im worried about are those springs.
Well I'm not Greg, but I think you'll be fine with the stock springs and the 901, so long as the stock springs are in good condition. That said, I'd replace 'em with Crane springs the next time you have the valve covers off, but until then, I wouldn't worry about it. That things sees never sees the far side of 5000rpm, right?

Thanks
I had the 901 for a year now, and while it is a great cam, it will crap out and quit building any power long before you can float the valves...
