I have been having problems with the ESOF on my 2001 F250. It started out it would not come out of 4-low. Then it would not shift out of 4-HI. Then all I had was 2HI but the 4x4 dash light stays on all the time. I checked all the fuses and the hubs were in auto throughout this whole experience. I crawled underneth and checked the motor but it was not working. After putting dielectric grease on all connections, relays and fuses I can get the truck to shift into 4-low and have all 4 wheels spin. Then i can shift it into 4-HI and it will stay in 4wd but if I shift it into 4-HI from 2-HI it will stay in 2wd even while clicking back to 4HI. The whole time the 4x4 dash light stays on. Anybody have anything like this happen?
Sounds like you may have had 2 problems, auto hubs (vacuum leak) and the connections to your shift motor in the transfer case, which you have fixed. Turn your hubs manually to the lock position and see if you have 4x4 like you expect. If so, you know you have a vacuum leak preventing auto engagement of the hubs. The usual culprit is cracking due to heat at the axle end of the rubber hoses that supply the vacuum connection.
All 4 wheels are spinning because my driveway is glare ice, no lockers. I just returned home and if the hubs are in auto I have no 4wd in high or low. Now here is the confusing part, when the hubs are in lock and I shift from 2H to 4H it will stay in 2WD. Then I can stop and shift into 4LOW and it will engage the 4WD, then if i stop and shift it bak to 4H it will stay in 4WD in the 4H position.
