Hello,
I been having trouble with my starter heating up and not having the power to start the truck after it has been running for a while. What is the best way to block the heat from the header?
It sounds like your having more of a starter problem, over advanced timing, etc But if your worried about the heat you can buy header wrap. I take it you are running headers? How close are they to the starter? I've seen insulating blankets wraped around the starter too.
a better way is a good battery ( optima) good cables and a high torque aftermarket starter if you have the extra $ to throw at it, if not, good cables, good connections, correct timing and i built a shield that bolted to the starter bolts, out of sheetmetal that worked good as a heat deflecter, but went to fenderwell exit headers and didnt need it anymore
Yea I just replaced the starter with a good ole peice of **** from autozone. If i can keep the heat off of it . It may work ok for me. and yes i have headers.THanks for your help.
i dont know if anyone is familiar with welding supplies but here might a simple, easy, and inexpensive solution to the hot starter problem. they sell a heat shield that you pull on your glove when you weld. it is silver looking and is the exact size of the starter. i think it costs about 2 dollars. cant swear that it works yet cause i just put one on my starter a few weeks ago. but after replacing 2 or 3 starters in a year or two i bought a new one and am trying this shield idea. ok then hope this is a good idea, Eddie II
To Eddie II, Hey I did the same thing about two years ago. My starters got so hot that the solenoids would melt right off of the starter. (no bull) I haven't had a problem since. I would suggest every one do it just as a precaution. It doesn't cost much and is good insurance. Regards gary
yep i had the same problem with selonoids melting. my timing is good and my truck usually start with the slightest flick of the key. also had good wires and 1000 cca batteries and all that and i finally figured out the heat was killing the starter. so you have used one of these welding glove shields for 2 years now??? if so thats great!!! maybe everyone will try this cheap easy idea and have good luck and save money and get rid of a small pain in the rear.
Yea Eddie my truck used to start like that. Just a touch on the starter and it fired, but I changed the carb from an edlebrock 600cfm to a 750cfm. the thing has unbelievable power now. Just like turning the lights on, but it cranks several times now before it fires. I haven't had a chance to check it out, but hope rejetting it might help. The other truck you are looking at sounds like a deal. Since your girl goes for it you've got it made. Good luck, Gary
