99 Explorer intermitent problem

99 Explorer intermitent problem
We have a 99 explorer, 4.0 liter, 106,000 miles. This has been a very good vehicle. The problem we are having is every once in a while the thing cuts out, I hope it`s just the fuel filter will let you know if this works. If you guys have any suggestions please let us know and thank you. Rod

When it cuts out, does it start back up right away? When you first turn the key to the 'on' position, you should hear the fuel pump run for about 3 seconds. If this is not the case (when it cuts out), it could be the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay. I'd start with the relay.

This problem we are having can happen most any time at any speed, it will cut out for just a split second and keep on running, no back fire, not even a cough it just quits for a split second and thats it. Some days it`s ok even weeks. As for the fuel pump I cant say I have ever heard it ever, this is something I will listen for. We sure need your help with this. Rod

You will only hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds with the key on, and the engine not cranking or running. Have you pulled the OBD codes yet? If it's electronic/spark related, that may tell you something. It can throw a code and not put the CEL on. That's where I would start.
