Two simple(?) problems
I have a 98 explorer 5.0 with two annoying problems. First problem is a whinning noise this has had since we purchased it. It sounds like PS problem but it is not, you can hear this noise before you see the thing coming down the street. No driveability problems. IAC ? The second problem is with the back door wont unlock with the key fob ever and with the unlock button inside only sometimes?? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

My first guess is the power steering pump, second is a pump in the trans (ouch!), third would be a differential-front or rear if 4wd. Check all the fluid levels. Eliminate the PS by rolling downhill in neutral, rev it up. If the whining does not follow the rpms then you can most likely assume the PS pump is not the source. If the noise happens only in drive and follows the rpms then look at the trans and drivetrain.
