Thumbs up Our 64

Hi, new to the site, but have been reading it for a couple of months. My grandson and I are just getting started to restore his dad's (my son) 64
f250 4X4. It has 300 six we have done some work on. Rebuilt head, rings
and inserts. This is 1st vehicle project for us both. Truck has granny 4 speed
and 9' flatbed that is rusted out. The truck will be used to pull his snowmobile trailer and 14' jon boat. Oh, grandson is 17 years old and great hunter and
fisherman. When we get truck down to frame I would like to take out the
granny 4 speed and put in an automatic tranny just for my driving pleasure.
Also, have located a 64 shortbox and would like to cut frame down to fit.
No problem with drive shafts. My son works where they build them.
My questions is can I convert to an auto tranny and will a c4 work?

You'd be better off with a C6 tranny if you're towing. They're bullet proof !! The C4 is also a good tranny, but not for what you want to do. They used the 300 6cyl up until the late 80's in trucks, so a C6 that would bolt on should be no problem to find. There's another thread here about C4-C6 trannys going on and it has some opinions about it. Go with the C6 and you won't regret it.

First off, welcome aboard!

Do you plan on buying a new tranny or are you going to shop the salvage yards? The problem with putting a C6 behind your 6 cyl is that it will rob all the power the motor puts out... A nice built C4 will bolt right up to your I6, you may have to do some fabbing to work in the transfer case (I'm not too familiar with the 4x4's). In the 4x, I would stick with what you have there (I6/4-speed) to maximize what the truck has to offer. Now if you want to upgrade to bigger motor and that good stuff, then you can open up a new can of worms.

Just my $.02's, --Mike
